Paul McCartney set to return to The Budokan this April

A special concert announced after selling out three shows at the Tokyo Dome, Paul McCartney is set to return to The Budokan on Tuesday 25th April, 2017.

Almost two years to the day since Paul McCartney rocked The Budokan for the second history making time in his career, music’s most revered icon has announced he’ll be returning to one of Japan’s most sacred venues with his all new One on One tour for a special concert on Tuesday 25th April.  The announcement follows Paul selling out three nights at the massive Tokyo Dome.  This show is set to be the biggest music event in Japan in 2017.

Speaking about his return Paul said “The Budokan is such a special venue for me.  I have amazing memories from first visiting in the 60s and then again on our last tour.  I was already excited to be returning to Japan but with the news of the three Dome shows selling out and now this extra date I can’t wait to get back with the band and celebrate!”

In 2015 Paul performed an emotionally charged two-hour concert, including 28 songs, at The Budokan as part of his Out There tour.  His return made global headlines as Macca-mania swept Japan, with over 5000 people lining the streets around the venue with press reports claiming the venue shook with the audience reaction!  As part of the show Paul performed ‘Another Girl’ for the first time.

The Beatles were the first ever rock band to play at The Budokan, amidst controversy, in 1966, driving the audience wild with a show featuring just eleven tracks.

On New Years Eve Paul made a surprise appearance on Kohaku Uta Gassen to tease his 2017 return to Japan.  Amidst the excitement and speculation that followed Paul confirmed the following day that he’d be bringing his One On One tour to Japan in April – his first live shows of 2017.

The One On One tour launched in the US in 2016 and saw Paul play 41 shows across 12 different countries to over 1.2 million people, winning rave reviews from both concert-goers and media.  The final run of shows in 2016 concluded with Paul’s headlining performance at the now legendary Desert Trip festival in the US.
One On One is the first new Paul McCartney tour since the juggernaut that was the Out There tour came to its stunning conclusion in 2015, the tour included 11 sell out shows in Japan across two separate visits.

The Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show—and so much more: Packed full of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music, dozens of songs that have formed the soundtracks of our lives. Paul and his band have played an unparalleled range of venues and locations: outside the Coliseum in Rome, Moscow's Red Square, Buckingham Palace, The White House, a free show in Mexico for over 400,000 people, the last ever show at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park where The Beatles played their final concert 1966, and even one performance broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul's band of the last 10+ years – Paul "Wix" Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – the show is never anything short of life-changing.

The One On One tour features a brand new production, as always, utilising state of the art audio and video technology and to ensure an unforgettable experience from every seat in the house. Employing massive screens, lasers, fireworks and, of course, a staggering selection of the best songs ever written or performed, every Paul McCartney show promises a once in a lifetime evening that transcends and elevates the potential of live music.

A tribute to Al Jarreau

Alwin Lopez Jarreau

The one and only  -  treasured – beloved

Following the news of Al’s illness last week it is with very heavy hearts that we must tell you that, tragically, he lost his battle for life and passed away in Los Angeles early this morning.

It is our understanding that his wife and son and a few very close family friends were with him.

Al has suffered several occasions of ill health over the over the past few years, but with his indomitable spirit and lust for life and love of music – he always bounced back to bring more joy to millions of people across the globe.

The world is certainly a better place for Al’s presence, warmth and humanity.

We pray that he is at peace, with no more pain and we thank him for the abundant legacy of music he leaves us all.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

This is a very, very sad day.

The joyous relationship with Al and Marshall Arts began back in 1978 and what a fusion of styles Al brought to us; Soul, Jazz, Blues, Scat, Rock – it was all in there and was such a treat.

No one had heard anything like Take Five and over the following years Al just added more layers to his incredible interpretations of so many songs with amazing musicians, who, of course adore him. Al has the uncanny and legendary gift to mimic any instrument and has challenged many a great player.

Year after year Al has brought his magic. ‘Moonlighting’ was a wonderful time with the TV series credited as giving Bruce Willis his big break. Al seems to have been at the beginning of many things.

Whenever he walks into a room, he smiles and the sun comes out. He brings not only his talent, but a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. He has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation.

Indeed he worked as a rehabilitation counsellor in San Francisco – which shows his unselfish nature and tremendous care for others.

But it’s his music that had reached so many millions across the world. A great favourite at so many Festivals, he has been asked to return time after time to receive wonderful accolades.

His concerts were an amazing experience. There are simply too many amazing performances to mention. Montreux, Nordsee, Ronnie Scott’s, but the stand out was the fabulous night at Wembley Arena in 1984. Completely sold out and with very special guest David Sanborn. Footage of that night can still be seen online and sounds as fresh today as it did then.

He has been honoured with so many Awards throughout his Career – so many Grammys in different categories. Perhaps it is fitting that his passing is on the day of the Grammys—a stage he graced so often.

Each one of us in the Marshall Arts Family will continue to hold him in our hearts – with so much love and unending respect.
